Scaling Success in the Trades Industry with Ron Cuff
Welcome to another episode of The Entrepreneur’s Journey with Michael Pallozzi, where successful entrepreneurs share their stories of starting, growing, and eventually selling their businesses—or transitioning them to the next generation. In this episode, Pallozzi speaks with Ron Cuff, CEO and co-owner of High Point Home Services, about his remarkable entrepreneurial journey in the trades industry. With years of experience in investment advising, Pallozzi leads insightful conversations designed to help entrepreneurs learn from one another’s successes and challenges.
Ron’s journey in the trades industry is one of grit, growth, and strategic pivots. He co-founded High Point Roofing in 2017 with his partner Greg. Together, they navigated the fierce competition of New Jersey’s roofing market, particularly during the tough winter months when business slowed down. But instead of giving up, they chose to work harder. They offered competitive pricing, went above and beyond for customers, even answering calls late at night, and provided immediate service whenever possible. It was this commitment to exceptional customer service that helped them not only survive but thrive.
Learning from Early Mistakes: Hiring the Right Team
Like many entrepreneurs, Ron and Greg faced some early mistakes—one of which was their approach to hiring. They initially focused on hiring experienced roofers, only to realize that what they truly needed were individuals with a strong work ethic, solid morals, and reliability. They quickly shifted their hiring strategy, looking for people with passion and integrity and then training them on the job. This change helped them build a dedicated team, which eventually allowed them to step away from the day-to-day operations of the business and focus on scaling.
Building the right team became the key to their success. It wasn’t just about filling roles; it was about creating a culture where the business could operate effectively, even without their constant oversight. This laid the groundwork for their eventual successful exit, when they sold High Point Roofing to a private equity firm.
A Shift in Focus: From Roofing to Diversification
After selling High Point Roofing, Ron and Greg didn’t stop there. They saw an opportunity to diversify and took on a new venture in the electrical and HVAC industries. The transition wasn’t easy, especially during the complicated due diligence process, but they relied on their strong team to keep operations running smoothly. The experience of managing two businesses at once was challenging but rewarding, and it helped Ron expand his entrepreneurial expertise even further.
Helping Others: The Birth of Forge
Throughout his career, Ron found that many entrepreneurs—especially in the construction and trades industries—struggled with scaling their businesses effectively. Business owners often had trouble with cash flow, profitability, and establishing operational efficiency. As Ron received more and more calls asking for advice, he realized there was a significant gap in the support available to small business owners in the trades.
This realization led to the creation of Forge, a new educational platform launching in January 2025. Forge will provide business courses designed to help entrepreneurs in the trades industry improve their operations and scale their businesses. Topics will cover essential areas such as finance, sales, marketing, and operations. The goal is to teach practical skills like budgeting, reading financial reports, ethical sales practices, and proper estimating—all with the aim of helping business owners step out of the day-to-day grind and create systems that allow their companies to run smoothly.
Ron is passionate about filling this knowledge gap. Many tradespeople are highly skilled at their craft but lack the business acumen to run a profitable company. Forge will equip them with the tools they need to build more successful businesses and improve the quality of their work. The platform is not just about business success; it’s about creating better companies and higher-quality contractors across the industry.
A Journey Rooted in Hard Work
Ron’s path to success didn’t follow a traditional route. From an early age, he worked alongside his father, who was a full-time police officer but also worked in construction on the side. Although his father hoped he would pursue a college education to avoid the manual labor of construction, Ron took a different path. After struggling in college and eventually dropping out, Ron returned home and dove back into the trades, working in construction, managing a GNC store, and later becoming an insurance adjuster and construction consultant. It wasn’t until he partnered with Greg that he co-founded High Point Roofing, setting the stage for his entrepreneurial success.
Reflecting on his journey, Ron credits his strong work ethic and ability to manage and scale businesses for his success. He acknowledges the challenges of working long hours and facing the ups and downs of business partnerships, but his drive to build and succeed kept him going. Ron’s evolution from manual laborer to business leader is a testament to his perseverance and desire to continually grow and improve.
Final Thoughts: The Importance of Learning and Evolving
Ron’s entrepreneurial journey is a perfect example of how hard work, strategic thinking, and continuous learning can lead to success. From starting a roofing business in a competitive market to launching a platform that will help other entrepreneurs scale their businesses, Ron’s story is one of resilience and adaptability. His experience in managing teams, learning from mistakes, and seeking out new opportunities shows that success isn’t just about working hard—it’s about working smart and never stopping the pursuit of knowledge.
For entrepreneurs in the trades or any industry, Ron’s journey offers valuable lessons. Building the right team, understanding the financials, creating systems to scale, and seeking guidance when needed are all essential steps in building a successful business. As Forge prepares to launch in 2025, it promises to be a game-changer for many entrepreneurs who want to level up their operations and thrive in today’s competitive market.
Stay tuned for more insights from The Entrepreneur’s Journey, and remember that every entrepreneurial path is unique, but the key to success remains the same: hard work, strategic decisions, and a willingness to learn and grow.
