What we’ve learned from other business owners

When you own a business, you learn things the hard way, and then you get to hand those lessons to somebody else before they have to learn them the hard way, too.
I’m a big “Essentialism” guy. There’s a line in that book by Greg McKeown that if you don’t prioritize your life, somebody else will.
So the question I’m always asking is, what’s important now? What are the vital few things we need to get done?
We used to do the giant financial plan, the 72 things you need to do to fix your financial situation.
It looked cool, but it didn’t move the needle enough. So now we boil it down to one or two things at a time.
And the surprisingly hard part is getting people to do the things they said they wanted to do, paid us to do, and that check all the boxes.
So we lead with the vital few, not the laundry list.
And this is the part your average advisor doesn’t really get, because they’ve never lived it.
Because business owners are builders, right? They’ve got a lot of things on the go, a lot of pieces in their financial puzzle.
So their wealth has created more complication, which puts them further away from whatever it is they want to spend their time doing, which isn’t work.
And they’ve got all these complicated needs, and no one’s helping them.
But you don’t see that if you’re not in it yourself.
Those advisors don’t see how having a successful business can make things more complex, and they don’t see the drive to chase opportunities, and how that can lead you in circles.
