Why We Stopped Delivering Massive Documents
April 1, 2026 •

Long ago, we did the thing that most financial planning firms do. We’d sit down with a new client, run the full analysis, and then deliver this giant financial plan.
It looked really cool. Had our logo on it.
And inside? 72 things you need to do to fix your financial life.
It felt like we were delivering massive value. I mean, look at all that work. Look at all those recommendations. The client would flip through it, nod along, say “wow, this is great,” and then… nothing happened.
Nobody did anything.
So here’s what we learned, especially working with business owners who’ve got a million things pulling at them every day: comprehensive doesn’t mean effective.
In fact, most of the time, comprehensive is the enemy of effective.
You hand someone a 72-item to-do list and their brain just shuts off. They’ve got payroll to run, crews to manage, a family to get home to. That binder goes on a shelf, and it stays there.
So we flipped the whole model.
Now, when we sit down with a client, we start with what we call a SiteSurvey. It’s basically a whiteboard exercise. What’s the reality you’re operating in? What do you want your life to look like? What’s the rough plan today? Who are the players?
And then from all of that, we pull out the vital few: what are the one or two things that matter most right now?
That’s it. One or two of the most important things.
This isn’t a transaction. We’re not selling you a plan and sending you on your way. This is a relationship we expect to have for 20 or 30 years. We’ll get to item number 47 on that old list eventually. But right now, let’s do the thing that actually moves the needle for where you are today.
And then we get together in the spring, and again in the fall.
We check in.
We ask, how’d that go? What changed? What’s the next most important thing? And we keep moving you forward, rung by rung.
I’m a big “essentialism” guy.
The question I keep coming back to is: what’s important now?
Not, what are all the things that could possibly matter someday? What are the vital few that we need to get done so you can feel like you’re making progress and not just drowning in complexity?
Because that’s what I think people actually want.
They don’t want a binder.
They want someone walking alongside them who knows the path, knows the steps, and helps them take the next one.
Not just staring at a list that never moves the needle.
That’s what BuiltWealth™ is.
Not a deliverable.
A journey we walk with you.
