Is your house in order?

So Rung 4 on the BuiltWealth™ Ladder is what I call: getting your house in order

And I know, that sounds like paperwork. It sounds like binders. It sounds like stuff you do when you have time.

But in the real world, especially in the trades, opportunity doesn’t send you a calendar invite.

You get a call from a competitor. A private equity group sniffs around. Your key service manager leaves. Or life happens, health happens, family happens, right?

And all of a sudden the question isn’t, “Would I ever sell?” The question is, “Can I?” And if I can, is it on my terms, or am I reacting?

Here’s the big question on Rung 4: What would need to be true for me to walk away from the business of my dreams?

Because that’s the point.

This rung is not about the big check. (Rung 5 is “big check, big decisions.” )

This rung is the lead-up.

It’s the prep.

It’s making sure that when the moment comes, you’re not trying to make a life-altering decision in two or three months under pressure.

And so the way we do this is simple. Not easy, but simple

I’m a big essentialism guy: what’s important now, what are the vital few things that actually move the needle?

First: the business has to be transferable

Meaning it runs without you. If you took a 30-day fishing trip and turned your phone off, what breaks? Where are you the bottleneck? That’s not a character flaw, that’s just the brutal facts of reality.

Once we know, we can fix it.

Second: you need clean financials and a valuation you can defend

Not “I meet my accountant April 12th.” I mean real numbers: margins, job costing, add-backs that make sense, and clarity around how the business actually makes money.

Third: you need ‘what-if’ planning

What if you can’t work for 90 days? What if the market shifts? What if your biggest customer leaves? This is where you stop living on autopilot, because autopilot is work, work, work, and that’s the dangerous default.

Fourth: you need coordination

This is the “general contractor” part. Most owners have an accountant, an attorney, an insurance person, a financial advisor, but nobody is talking. And the power of everyone talking together on behalf of the business owner is a compound effect you can’t see till you look backwards.

Now, where does this go?

It can go down a path of family succession. It can go to a sale path. It can look like keeping the business but replacing you operationally.

The point is options.

Because if you don’t prioritize your life, somebody else will. And Rung 4 is you choosing, intentionally, to build a business you could walk away from, even if you don’t want to yet.
