So which one is right for you?
We work with a lot of business owners, and some of them never knew that they could exit their business the way they wanted.
That’s why there are questions we ask our clients so we can make sure they have a good footing going into the decision.
Questions like, “Do you plan to sell, or do you plan to pass it down to the next generation in your family?”
A lot of times, it’s within the family. If the kids are in the business or are more entrepreneurial, they might want to take the reins and start running it themselves.
And a lot of business owners don’t know that they can pass it down in an efficient way, which might make their life a lot easier down the road.
Sometimes, the business owner wants to find an outside buyer.
In those cases, they’re usually buying the business, not the ongoing work of the owner. So that means we ask questions to make sure the business is set up in such a way that it can be handed over, without the owner being embedded in all of its systems, unable to get themselves out of it.
In those cases, we may connect the owner with consultants we trust who can make sure they have the right systems and structures set up to make the transition smoother for all parties involved.
And the type of buyer they might be looking to attract, ranging from private equity to a peer business, might change the way they structure their next few years of work to set things up in an appealing way for a particular buyer.
That really cements the importance of planning a few years in advance of an exit.
When you get the check in hand, you want to know that it’s the right amount that will take care of your family and your legacy and the rest of your life.
You want to know that it‘s not going to be chaotic, and that you can be confident you have everything in order, wrapped up in a bow.
A lot of times, business owners will think that the only time they need to understand the value of their company is when they’re trying to sell it.
But we explain to them that running your business as if you were preparing to sell it — even if you aren’t — can often improve how potential buyers or partners perceive its value and may, in some cases, lead to higher proceeds or income. Results depend on factors such as industry, timing, financial performance, and execution.
I should be clear, though, that we’re not management consultants. We’re not profitability consultants.
What we are is a team of financial and investment advisors who work with clients and business owners, all day long, to manage their investments and their finances in their business and throughout their entire life.
And we quarterback their entire team of advisors to get everyone aligned and working together on the clients’ behalf.
All of it starts with questions, because your answers will affect the exit you’re planning for.
And the plan we’ll help you create, maintain, and adapt over time to support your objectives.
So let’s sit down and talk about the possibilities, ones you may never have even considered before.
